Why Auxiliary Police
- To relieve regular police for other duties
- To provide more visible patrols to reduce burglaries and acts of vandalism
- To aid in traffic control in areas around major accidents and fires
- To patrol during parades and special events
The Organization
The auxiliary police was established in 1941 under the State Defense Emergency Act, to help the regular police in an event of civil defense emergency.
The auxiliary police is a volunteer organization of citizens who are pledged to serve the community without pay.
The auxiliary police are the "trained eyes and ears" of the regular police. Just the presence of the police uniforms helps to prevent crime and other problems.
Trained by the Nassau County Police Academy for 22 weeks covering peace officer powers, New York State penal law, hazardous materials awareness, baton training, blood-borne pathogens, basic first aid/CPR, traffic and pedestrian control, handicapped parking enforcement, response to critical incidents and many aspects of community service.
Applicants must be 18 years or older, must be a resident of Nassau County, must be a citizen of the United States, must possess a valid New York State driver's license, must possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Must be of good moral character without a felony conviction. A misdemeanor conviction may also prevent acceptance. No more than one (1) alcohol related driving offense. Must pass a physical examination, must submit to fingerprinting, Must consent to a background investigation. Must submit to a drug test and be willing to submit to a psychological exam. Members with certain disabilities may be eligible to serve in non-patrol duties, such as the Auxiliary Police Communications Unit.
